CardWise Compass / A clearer path to free travel.

Hi {{first name | friend}}!

Last issue, we talked about how an unpaid balance erases any value from your points. This week's mistake adds up: not using the benefits you're already paying for.

Estimated read time: 3 minutes

Today's Issue at a Glance:

  • Signal: I made you a quick quiz that scores how close you are to a business class trip using your existing spending and points, to show you that it’s possible!

  • Strategy: A benefit you never use is “free” money you lose

  • Scenario: How $376 in credits can turn a $95 annual fee into a card that pays you

  • Step: A copy-paste AI prompt (or a low-tech backup) that tracks benefits on your cards

Signal

No featured deal this week, on purpose. Instead, I built this: How Close Are You to Business Class With Your Points? Answer five short questions about your spending and points, and you’ll get a Business Class Readiness Score and the two highest value actions for your current situation. Takes you 60 seconds (and it took me several hours to pull together for you!)

Strategy

If you remember one idea from this week's newsletter, let it be this:

A benefit you never use is “free” money you lose. (Stumbled into that rhyme.)

Every card with an annual fee, and plenty without one, have credits most people never use, either because they don’t realize their cards’ benefits, or life gets busy and they forget.

A few worth checking on the Sapphire Preferred alone:

  • $100 hotel credit through Chase Travel (I developed a “travel hack” to just pocket the $100 credit without staying at a hotel. Reply if you want to know my trick!)

  • $120 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck/Nexus credit (once every 4 years)

  • Free year of Apple TV (value of $156, enroll by Dec 31, 2026)

  • Trip / baggage delay and rental car insurance (all automatic, no enrollment needed)

A couple issues back, we covered whether a card's credits can cover its fee on paper; this issue is about whether you're the one collecting them.

Scenario

Let's say two people both have the Sapphire Preferred and pay the same $95 fee.

Reader A never logs into the benefits page, earns points, books travel in the portal, and calls the card a win. Fair enough.

Reader B does one extra thing: they check the benefits tab (on the Chase website) twice a year, use the $100 hotel credit on a stay they were already booking, apply the $120 credit to TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, and enroll in the free Apple TV year.

Reader B earned $376 in value against a $95 fee, netting $281 before counting a single point.

Not every benefit fits every life, so adjust your valuation of these perks down if they don't deserve the “on-paper value.” But use ‘em or lose ‘em, folks!

Step

Keeping track of benefits can be tough. Copy/paste the prompt below in your AI of choice, and input your cards. It organizes the credits and deadlines you might be missing.

Card Benefits Checklist Prompt

I want to ensure I'm using every benefit on my credit cards, not just earning points on them.

My cards are: [list your cards here]

Before filling anything in, search for each card's current official benefits page (or the most recent reputable source). Don't rely on memory, since these change often. If sources disagree or you're not confident on a specific value, mark that row "verify." Don’t guess.

Build a table per card: Card | Benefit | Value | How I use it | Reset or deadline | Confidence (official / verify)

Flag anything needing enrollment or activation, as those are easiest to miss.

Then, separately, list any one-time or use-it-or-lose-it actions with dates, soonest first.

Finally, rank the top 3 benefits that I need to take action on now.

Yours Truly, from CardWise Travel

Honest confession: I almost kept this behind a paid service instead of a free email. But if this prompt helps you use your cards that you're already paying for, that's a win! If it helped you though, would you please forward this newsletter to a friend? You can also share this link so they can grab the points guide as a free gift when they subscribe.

If AI isn't your thing, reply with the cards you carry and I'll send back a quick rundown of your benefits myself, from a trusted human, free of charge.

Next issue: mistake #8, hoarding or not using your points, and why waiting for the "perfect" redemption usually costs more than just using them. “Points-flation” is real, friends!

Blessings, and I hope to hear from you soon!
